TaxSlayer Free Edition Conclusion

TaxSlayer’s Free Edition is best for those with the simplest of tax returns, only needing a 1040-EZ form to completely file their income taxes. The price of $14.90 for filing a state return is about average when compared with other online tax services. However, you'll get a great value if you upgrade to the more robust TaxSlayer Classic Edition and file your federal and state returns ($4.95 state + $9.95 federal). If you need to file a state tax return, we highly recommend upgrading to TaxSlayer Classic, which gives you the added benefit of access to technical support over the phone.

Compared to other online tax services, TaxSlayer scored average on Ease of Use, Tax Support, and Technical Support. We found their interface difficult to use primarily because of the lack of a “double-check” feature on W-2 entries. Their support was also lacking live chat and an Audit Defense feature that some other online tax services offer for an additional charge. This service also received a low score on Reliability because of its lack of an accuracy guarantee and relatively short company history.

TaxSlayer offers average tax products at prices lower than those offered by TurboTax and H&R Block. TaxSlayer products received average scores on Ease of Use, Tax Support and Tech Support, but their lack of an Accuracy Guarantee makes them slightly less reliable than their competitors. The biggest advantage is the low price, but the difficulties with using the software and the overall lack of features offered by competitors make it less desirable than software offered by TurboTax, H&R Block or TaxAct.
