TaxSlayer Classic Edition Conclusion

TaxSlayer’s Classic Edition is best for those who need to file 1040, 1040-EZ, or 1040A forms. This edition also includes Schedule C and F (business forms) and Schedule E and K-1 (for rental properties). The price of $9.95 is relatively low for basic tax software, and the $4.95 for filing a state return is the lowest of all other online tax services we’ve reviewed.

Compared to other online tax services, TaxSlayer scored average on Ease of Use, Tax Support, and Technical Support. We found their interface difficult to use primarily because of the inability to upgrade to their Premium Edition while filling out your return without having to start over from the beginning. TaxSlayer also lacks the ability to import your 1099 or W-2 and does not have a “double-check” feature on your W-2 entries that all other tax software we’ve reviewed includes. Their support was also lacking live chat and Audit Defense features that some other online tax services offer for an additional charge. This service also received a low score on Reliability because of its lack of an accuracy guarantee and relatively short company history.

TaxSlayer offers average tax products at prices lower than those offered by TurboTax and H&R Block. TaxSlayer products received average scores on Ease of Use, Tax Support and Tech Support, but their lack of an Accuracy Guarantee makes them slightly less reliable than their competitors. The biggest advantage is the low price, but the difficulties with using the software and the overall lack of features offered by competitors make it less desirable than software offered by TurboTax, H&R Block or TaxAct.
