TaxACT Free Edition Conclusion

TaxACT's Free Edition is the company's most basic offering. With it, you still receive several of the company's essential features, but there are several notable ones that are not included or cost extra. The Free Edition allows you to enter one Life Event (such as having a baby), but requires you to upgrade if you need to report more than one event. You also can receive free tax advice via email from TaxACT's tax professionals, but the ability to speak to a tax professional over the phone requires an upgrade. You also need to keep in mind whether you need to file a state return when comparing tax products. Even though this product is classified as a "Free Edition," it actually costs you $14.95 to file a state return.

The Free Edition uses the exact same interface as the high end products, making the Free Edition just as easy to navigate as any of TaxACT's other products. If you have no investments and have experienced very few life changes over the course of the last year, then TaxACT's Free Edition is a suitable choice for preparing your taxes.
