TaxACT: Ease of Use

4

TaxACT's line of products are intuitive and easy to use. Before entering any of your information, you are given the option to watch a training video. This training video takes you through all the basic steps of setting up your account and explains how to navigate between all the different categories. Your tax filing process is broken down into seven steps: Basic Info, Life Events, Federal Q&A, State Q&A, Review, Filing, and Next Year. Once you begin entering your information, a step-by-step guide effectively walks you through each category. Unfortunately, TaxACT cannot look up your employer's ID if you do not have it available. However, TaxACT excels at maximizing credits and deductions. They go into detail on any interest you've accrued over the past year. TaxACT's system automatically saves any information you have entered whenever you navigate between steps or log out, or if your session has timed out. When you log-in, you are automatically directed to the last saved page from the previous session. TaxACT will import information from either last year's tax return (provided you used TaxACT last year), or from a PDF of last year's return, if available.

TaxACT: Tax Support

3

TaxACT offers live tax advice during tax season on M-F 8 a.m.- 9 p.m., Sat 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. & Sun 12 p.m.-5 p.m. However, in order to receive access to a tax professional, you must prepay for their service, instead of paying at the end when you file. TaxACT helps prevent audits by flagging potential areas of concern on your tax return. In the event that you are audited, they have an "audit assistant" program, with which you can enter your audit number and receive step-by-step guidance on handling your audit. Unfortunately, there is no live audit support available, nor will they actually represent you in the event that you are audited.

TaxACT: Tech Support

4

All of TaxACT's products give you access to phone and email customer support. Tech support, as well as tax support from a tax professional, is available M-F 8 a.m -9 p.m., Sat 8 a.m-5 p.m., and Sun 12 p.m.-5 p.m. Unfortunately there is no live chat help available, and their knowledgebase is a bit difficult to navigate. On the plus side, their phone and email support techs are very knowledgeable and responsive.

TaxACT: Reliability

5

TaxACT has been in business for over 10 years and has has become one of the most reputable online tax service providers in recent years. They developed a positive reputation by offering to pay the IRS if your return is not accurate due to an error caused by their system. They also offer a Maximum Refund Pledge, which means that if you get a larger refund or smaller tax due from another tax preparation method, they will give you a full refund your product price and any associated fees.

TaxACT: Pricing

TaxACT's line of products are competitively priced ranging from free for the most basic online edition to $54.95 for the downloadable product most capable of handling complex tax returns. Keep in mind that even with the free product there is a fee associated with efiling your state tax return. The cost of efiling your state return with TaxACT is between $8 and $14.95 depending on what level product you are interested in. Also, when it comes to pricing it is important to note that the only difference between the TaxACT Deluxe and TaxACT Ultimate is that TaxACT Ultimate includes a state filing charge at a discount already included in the price.
