Vested Benefits

The benefits (known as vested benefits) you are allowed to keep when you leave the job for your contributions to a retirement plan. For example, your contributions, to a 401(k) are immediately 100 percent vested. Employer contributions on your behalf, however, can be vested gradually over a period of time as a way to encourage you to stay with the employer. A 2007 law requires faster vesting than was demanded in the past.
