Cancellation of Debt

When a creditor forgives debt without payment, the amount is considered part of the taxpayer’s gross income. Referred to as COD (Cancellation of Debt) Income, it is considered taxable income for the individual unless the creditor intended it as a gift or it meets certain exceptions relating to bankruptcy, insolvency, or farming.
