Tax-Compare.com was created to consolidate and organize information about the top providers of tax return preparation software and web based services so that you can make an "apples to apples" comparison of the different products and select the one that best fits your needs. We found the process of researching the various providers and their products to be extremely tedious. It was very difficult to ascertain core facts that we thought were important for the selection process. Most of the vendors offer similar products and services, but the pricing options vary widely as well as the versatility of the products. Tax-Compare.com allows you to quickly understand the features most important to you, compare the top vendors and become an informed consumer.

Methodology

If you do not enter any information about yourself on our website, the website will show you the least expensive options offered by the various vendors. After you enter information, the website will determine the least expensive option offered by the various vendors that has the features required to handle your needs. For example, if you tell the website that you reside in California, a state that requires residents to file state income tax, it will show you the least expensive option offered by each vendor including any additional fees for filing state income tax returns. Checking or un-checking boxes will not necessarily change your results.

However, as we are not affiliated with any of the product and service providers we review, occasionally they will make a changes to their offerings without notifying us. In addition, occasionally our team will make a mistake when loading information onto our website. When we become aware of such inaccuracies we strive to update our site expeditiously. We encourage our users to call out any such inaccuracies and to independently verify our information before making a purchase.

TaxCompare.com is a product review site. The product reviewed on this site is software that assists in the preparation of tax returns. We have reviewed the pricing, usability and feature sets of the products on our site. However, WE ARE NOT ACCOUNTANTS, TAX ATTORNEYS, TAX PROFESSIONALS OR EVEN PEOPLE WITH ABOVE AVERAGE INTELLIGENCE. We do not give tax advice or assist in the preparation of tax returns. We do not guarantee the accuracy of any return prepared by or in conjunction with any of the vendors or products reviewed on our website and we do not guarantee that any product you purchase after using our site for research will be sufficient to meet your needs.

Compensation

Tax-Compare is a for-profit business, but rather than charging a subscription fee, we have referral agreements with many of the companies we review, including TurboTax, HR Block, TaxAct and Complete Tax.  The terms of our compensation agreements do not impact our reviews.  We want to earn your loyalty, so you'll continue to come to us for advice. If you think we've misled you, I doubt you'd return. I wouldn't.

How Does Tax-Compare Make Money?

Tax-Compare is a for-profit business, but rather than charging a subscription fee, we have referral agreements with many of the companies we review. In an effort to provide a complete comparison resource we review companies regardless of whether or not they offer a referral program. The terms of our compensation agreements do not impact our reviews for three primary reasons. 1) We typically only get paid if you actually sign up for the service. 2) Often, you must not cancel the service or return the product before the expiration of an initial period (typically 30 to 45 days). If we were to misrepresent a product or service, you would likely cancel or request a refund, and we'd all lose. 3) We want to earn your loyalty, so you'll continue to come to us for advice. If you think we've misled you, I doubt you'd return. I wouldn't.
